What is a Liquid Capsule?
Liquid-filled capsules vs softgels
A Liquid Capsule lets a supplement brand use oil-based or liquid extracts without converting them into powder. This guide explains how it works, how it compares with softgels and what to know before production.

A Liquid Capsule is a two-piece hard capsule filled with a liquid active, such as an oil or liquid extract, with the joint sealed to prevent leaks. It differs from a softgel, whose one-piece shell is formed during filling. Mark Bio Technology makes Liquid Capsules at its factory in Thanyaburi, Pathum Thani, Thailand, under ISO 22000:2018, HACCP, GHP and HALAL. Minimum order is 5,000 units.
How a Liquid Capsule works
A Liquid Capsule uses the same two-piece hard capsule as a powder capsule, but is filled with liquid instead of powder. The joint between body and cap is then sealed so the liquid cannot leak. Fills are usually oils or oil-soluble extracts.
With a clear capsule, customers can see the colour of the liquid inside, which signals a liquid extract at a glance.
Liquid Capsule vs softgel
| Aspect | Liquid Capsule | Softgel |
|---|---|---|
| Shell | Two-piece hard capsule, sealed joint | One-piece soft shell |
| Process | Liquid filled into ready-made capsules | Shell formed and filled in one step |
| Look | Capsule shape, clear or coloured | Oval or round, glossy |
| Extensions | Can pair with Double Capsule for some formulas | Single format |
Benefits of Liquid Capsules for supplement brands
- Use liquid extracts directly. No need to convert oils or liquid extracts into powder before filling.
- A distinctive look. A clear capsule showing the liquid inside looks modern and stands apart from ordinary powder capsules.
- Room for specialty formats. The industry also pairs liquid fills with Double Capsules, for example liquid in one layer and powder in the other. Feasibility depends on the formula; R&D assesses it.
What to know before producing a Liquid Capsule
- Liquid–shell compatibility. Fills with little or no water usually work best, as water can deform the capsule shell. R&D tests this before production.
- Viscosity and fill volume. These affect filling and the capsule size chosen (size 00, 0 or 1).
- Sealing and stability. Samples are checked for leaks and appearance before production is approved.
- Thai FDA registration. A Liquid Capsule is a food supplement and needs a 13-digit food serial number. Our team prepares and files it.
